live at studio a (the kdvs recording)

Live At Studio A was recorded and broadcast in 2009 at KDVS 90.3 FM. From deep in the bowels of the UC Davis campus, The Quilting Bee ran through their entire catalog -- save an early version of "Bernay's Out Phone Phreaking," which they had abandoned (no recording exists of the early version, which was based on a traditional funk song structure; it also cribbed lines from the Black Star song "Astronomy": "we're shining and shining and rhyming and rhyming").

Effects were added to the guitar in the booth, and when the band subsequently heard the recording of the broadcast, they noted their surprised. Apparently the tones in the studio were quite different. The set is raw, but shows some sign of polish, particularly in the drumming. The drumset was recorded with numerous microphones and the resulting sound is full and pleasant.

Because the band didn't have enough material to fill the whole hour, there is a large amount of "stage" banter (see the Situationst slogan) with frequent requests that listeners recommend the band for the KDVS all-day concert Operation Restore Maximum Freedom. The band's haranguing resulted in one email from a listener: "If the Quilting Bee doesn't restore my freedom, I don't even want it."
